Over the past two months, the United States has experienced a series of significant events that have not only shaped our nation’s trajectory but have also highlighted the resilience, strength, and influence of women. As we approach International Women’s Day on March 8, 2025, it’s essential to reflect on these developments and recognize the pivotal role women play in steering the course of our society.

Economic Shifts and Women’s Resilience

The recent economic landscape has been marked by fluctuations, with the Federal Reserve reporting a slight uptick in activity since mid-January. However, concerns loom over potential impacts from new trade policies and tariffs introduced by President Trump. Businesses express apprehension regarding how these changes might affect future demand and pricing.  In the face of such uncertainties, women have consistently demonstrated adaptability and resilience, often spearheading initiatives to stabilize and invigorate local economies.

In the realm of arts and culture, women’s stories and contributions have taken center stage. Saginaw Valley State University’s recent production of “Women Who Weave,” penned by Chicago playwright J.S. Puller, delved into themes of heroism and the conscious choices women make to define their destinies. The narrative challenges traditional notions of predestined paths, emphasizing that heroism is a deliberate choice, a sentiment that resonates deeply with many women’s experiences.

Additionally, Meghan Markle’s new Netflix series, “With Love, Meghan,” offers an intimate glimpse into her life, highlighting her close-knit friendships and daily endeavors. The show underscores the importance of genuine connections and the strength derived from supportive communities, reflecting the broader significance of solidarity among women.

Empowerment and Advocacy: The Road Ahead

As we gear up to celebrate International Women’s Day, this year’s theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” calls for actionable steps to unlock equal rights and opportunities for every woman and girl. However, the journey toward gender equality is fraught with challenges. A recent UN Women report reveals that nearly a quarter of governments worldwide reported a backlash on women’s rights in 2024. Despite significant progress, only 87 countries have ever been led by a woman, and alarmingly, a woman or girl is killed every 10 minutes by a partner or family member.  These statistics serve as a stark reminder of the work that remains and the urgency with which we must address these issues.
